As I was exploring the Clearwater area, I couldn’t resist the allure of Honeymoon Island, a stunning barrier island situated along the Gulf Coast of Florida, near Clearwater. This picturesque destination is part of Honeymoon Island State Park, which also includes the neighboring Caladesi Island.

Honeymoon Island is renowned for its unspoiled beauty, featuring pristine white-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and an abundance of native flora and fauna. It’s a paradise for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers. There’s a plethora of outdoor activities to enjoy on the island. You can take a dip in the gentle Gulf waters, bask in the sun, or explore the interior via hiking trails. The Osprey Trail is a favorite among hikers, offering the chance to observe birdlife and wildlife in their natural habitat.

If you’re a shell enthusiast, you’re in for a treat. Honeymoon Island is a treasure trove of seashells, making it a prime spot for shell collectors. The island is home to a diverse array of wildlife, from gopher tortoises to ospreys, eagles, and numerous shorebirds. Dolphins and manatees are also known to make appearances offshore.

Honeymoon Island State Park has a dedicated pet-friendly beach area known as Dog Beach, where your furry companions can frolic in the sand and surf alongside you. To enhance your visit, the park provides picnic areas, a cafe, restrooms, and a gift shop. Additionally, you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and bicycles to explore the island even further. The island boasts a touch of romantic history. Its unique name stems from a World War II veteran, Clinton Washburn, who honeymooned here with his new bride in the 1940s. During the tumultuous years of World War II, Clinton Washburn had embarked on a journey that took him far from home, into the heart of conflict and uncertainty. Like countless others of his generation, he bravely served his country during those trying times. The war was an era marked by separation, sacrifice, and courage, as young men and women faced the challenges of war on distant shores. Amidst the uncertainty and hardship, Clinton found solace in the love he shared with his bride. Their love story, like many others during the war, was a testament to resilience and the enduring power of love in the face of adversity. As the war came to an end and Clinton and his bride looked forward to a life together, they sought a place of natural beauty and serenity where they could begin their journey as husband and wife. It was then that they discovered the pristine, untouched shores of what is now known as Honeymoon Island.

For Clinton and his new bride, this island represented not only a geographical location but also a symbol of hope, renewal, and the start of a new chapter in their lives. It was a place where they could leave behind the challenges of the past and embrace the promise of the future. Their honeymoon on this secluded island became a cherished memory, a time when they could savor the simple pleasures of life: walking hand in hand along the beach, watching the sunset over the Gulf waters, and relishing the tranquility that surrounded them. It was a time of reconnection and rekindling of their love, a celebration of the enduring bond they shared. In honor of their love story and the beauty of this island that had played witness to their honeymoon, the name “Honeymoon Island” was born. It’s a name that resonates with the timeless sentiment of love, unity, and the hope that accompanies the beginning of a lifelong journey together.

To access Honeymoon Island State Park, there’s typically an admission fee per vehicle, which contributes to the park’s maintenance and conservation efforts. As of August 2023, it runs $8.00 per vehicle.

Our adventure from Honeymoon Island continued to a nearby Caladesi Island, and  began with an early boat ride, setting the stage for a day filled with natural wonders and serenity. The Caladesi Ferry runs every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas weather permitting.  There are two ferry boats that depart from Honeymoon Island Docks. As of August, 2023 price for adults is $18.00, children -$9.00 and kids 5 and under are free. Note that prices are subject to change. The pleasant 25-minute journey to the islands was nothing short of magical. As we cruised through the Gulf waters, a playful pod of dolphins graced us with their presence, following our pontoon boat. Pelicans and seagulls soared overhead, adding to the enchantment of the moment.

What made this experience truly special was the ease of it all. We were able to bring our beach chairs and umbrellas on board, making the journey even more comfortable. The anticipation built as we approached our destination, wondering what these islands had in store for us.

Upon arriving, we felt like we had discovered our own private paradise. The islands beckoned with their untouched beauty and tranquil shores. What struck us immediately was the serenity; there were hardly any people around. These islands offer a unique sense of seclusion, a rarity in such popular destinations.

The limited capacity of the ferry ensures that you’ll never feel cramped. It’s as if the beach was created just for you and your fellow travelers. This intimate setting allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

For those fortunate enough to have their own boat, access to these islands is a breeze. Caladesi Island even boasts its own marina, providing easy docking for boaters. But you can rent a boat yourself as well:

As the day began to wind down, and we reluctantly boarded the boat for our return journey, we couldn’t help but long for the islands’ beauty to never end. The ride back felt like a slow departure from paradise, but the memories of our day on Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island will forever remain a cherished part of our adventure along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Keep in mind that the park’s operating hours may vary by season, so it’s advisable to check the official Florida State Parks website or contact the park directly for the most up-to-date information regarding hours and any upcoming special events.

Honeymoon Island is a true gem, offering a perfect blend of relaxation, natural exploration, and the chance to soak up the splendid beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Whether you’re seeking a day of swimming, wildlife encounters, or simply unwinding on the beach, this destination has something special in store for every visitor.
